What is the best level for the water in my swimming pool?

A question we often get asked is “How high should the water in my pool be?”   This spring we’ve had some rain…some days quite heavy and we’ve had some periods of dry weather- in the same month.  Hello Florida!

Ideally you should keep your swimming pool water level between one third and one half the way up the skimmer opening in your pool. This is the level at which the your skimmer will operate most efficiently while keeping most of the debris off the waters surface.

If the level is higher than half way up, the water moving into the skimmer is going so slow that floating debris may pass by the opening.  And, if the pool water is so high that it covers the skimmer opening the floating debris won’t get in at all.

If the water level is too low, the skimmer  may suck air into the system which may result in losing the prime (water moving through the system) and possibly result in burning your filter pump motor.  Also, if the water level is below the skimmer opening, obviously it can’t enter into the skimmer to remove the debris.

Keeping this information in mind, you might have to add water or remove water to your pool between our visits to help your skimmer do the job it was intended to do.
